Hotel description and useful information for travellers

Cleanliness

Generally reported as clean in many reviews, but several mentions of musty smell, dated decor and an arrival smell of beer lower the score slightly.

Service

Mostly described as friendly and helpful reception/staff in many reviews, though a few guests noted indifferent or minimal interaction on check-in.

Location

Overwhelmingly praised as excellent — very close to Central Station, Chinatown, light rail and city centre; repeatedly cited as the property's main positive.

Room Quality

Mixed comments: some comfortable beds and large rooms, but frequent notes of small rooms, twin singles pushed together, noisy a/c and non-working fridge reduce the rating.

Amenities

Convenient transport access (light rail at door) and breakfast availability noted positively, but parking problems, a broken fridge and some dated fittings are negatives.

Value for Money

Several guests called it affordable or good value, while others felt it was becoming expensive or not great value — overall slightly below target.

Historic Building in Prime Location

Great Southern Hotel, housed in a charming 19 th-century building at the heart of Sydney CBD, offers a unique blend of history and modern comfort. Just a short stroll from Central Station, this hotel provides easy access to the city's top attractions.

Convenient Amenities and Features

Adjacent to Chinatown, the hotel boasts a restaurant, bar, and smoke-free rooms equipped with essential amenities like air conditioning, refrigerator, and tea/coffee maker. The 24-hour reception, guest laundry, and tour desk ensure a seamless stay for every guest.
